Google Ads now gives businesses several ways to use AI to find customers. Two names appear again and again: AI Max and Performance Max. They sound similar, but choosing between them starts with a practical question: where do you need your next sale or qualified lead to come from?

AI Max for Search enhances Search campaigns. Performance Max is a separate campaign type that reaches customers across Google’s advertising channels. The right choice depends on your offer, tracking, creative assets and budget. Some businesses have a useful role for both.

Why this comparison matters now

Google reported in April 2026 that hundreds of thousands of advertisers were already using AI Max. Its updated transition announcement also matters for existing accounts: automatic upgrades for campaigns using automatically created assets or the campaign-level broad match setting were scheduled to start in September 2026. The Dynamic Search Ads transition was moved to begin in February 2027.

What is AI Max for Search?

AI Max adds automation to Search campaigns through search term matching, text customization and final URL expansion. These capabilities help connect searches with relevant ads and website pages. Google also provides controls for steering that automation.

For a business owner, the practical decision is whether wider matching and automated messaging can bring valuable demand beyond the searches you already target. A larger pool of searches is useful only when the extra enquiries or purchases justify their cost.

What is Performance Max?

Performance Max is a goal-based campaign type that can run across Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps. It combines the goals, assets and other inputs you supply with Google’s AI to optimize delivery.

That broader reach brings a different preparation task: you need to think about how your offer looks and reads across multiple placements. Product imagery, video, landing pages and accurate conversion data deserve attention before you increase spending. Source: Google Ads Help on Performance Max.

Which should your business test first?

For a local service business

Our recommendation is to start by understanding the searches that produce qualified enquiries. If you offer emergency plumbing, for example, a booked repair has a different value from a call asking about employment.

A focused Search campaign can give you a useful starting point. Consider testing AI Max when you can judge the quality of additional demand and have landing pages that clearly explain your services and coverage area. Consider Performance Max when you have a clear reason to expand across channels and a reliable way to assess the leads it generates.

For an ecommerce store

Evaluate Performance Max when you have accurate product information, strong creative assets and trustworthy purchase measurement. Before you scale, review whether the products you promote can support the acquisition cost.

Search with AI Max may also deserve a test where shoppers describe problems, preferences or use cases that your products solve. Give each campaign a purpose and assess combined business results. Two campaigns reporting sales does not, by itself, prove that the business gained more sales overall.

For a business with a small budget

Choose one clear test before spreading spend across several new campaigns. Work backwards from your economics: what can you afford to pay for a customer, how often do qualified enquiries become customers, and how much evidence can the budget realistically produce?

A narrow service offering with strong existing search demand may justify testing Search first. A store with proven products may have a different starting point. There is no universal daily budget or campaign winner that fits every account.

Five checks before you turn up the budget

  1. Define a valuable conversion. Separate completed purchases and qualified enquiries from lighter actions such as page views. Make sure the numbers you judge reflect the outcome you actually want.
  2. Review the customer destination. Check that the landing page explains the advertised offer, works on mobile and makes the next step obvious. Where URL expansion is enabled, review its settings and destination reporting.
  3. Check the wording. Keep prices, delivery promises and service claims accurate. Review generated messaging as part of routine account management.
  4. Judge customer quality. Compare campaign reports with order records or your sales team’s feedback. Cheap enquiries can become expensive customers if very few convert.
  5. Set the decision rule before testing. Choose a success measure, a spending limit and a review point that accounts for your sales cycle. Avoid changing the offer, website and campaign strategy simultaneously if you want to understand what caused the result.

Measure profit and qualified demand

Consider this hypothetical example. Campaign A spends $1,000 and generates 50 enquiries. Campaign B spends the same amount and generates 25. Campaign A appears cheaper at $20 per enquiry, compared with $40.

But suppose A produces two customers and B produces five. Their acquisition costs are $500 and $200 respectively. The smaller enquiry total delivered the better customer outcome, assuming comparable customer value.

For ecommerce, apply the same discipline to revenue. A strong reported return on ad spend can still leave little profit after product costs, discounts, fulfilment and returns. Decide what success means for your margins before celebrating a dashboard number.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI Max the same as Performance Max?

No. AI Max for Search enhances Search campaigns; Performance Max is a separate campaign type with cross-channel reach.

Can I use both?

Yes. Give them distinct objectives and review how total customer acquisition changes. Avoid assuming that more campaign activity automatically means more incremental business.

Should I switch off a campaign that already works?

Our recommendation is to preserve a useful baseline and test changes deliberately. A new product name is not enough reason to replace a profitable setup.

Which produces better ROAS?

There is no dependable winner for every business. Your offer, margins, measurement and customer journey determine which setup deserves more investment.

Get the most out of your ad spend

The best next step is to identify where your current account loses value: irrelevant enquiries, weak product margins, confusing landing pages or unreliable measurement. Then choose a campaign test that addresses that problem.
